Green River Overlook

Overview

At the end of Green River Overlook Road in the Island in the Sky district, a very short paved path (about a couple minutes’ walk) leads to one of the park’s signature vistas. From roughly 6,000 feet, you’re looking 1,300 feet down into the Green River’s canyon and across a maze of buttes, mesas, and benches.

What You’ll See

• The Green River’s sweeping meanders far below
• The pale sandstone bench of the White Rim
• Named features like Turk’s Head, the Orange Cliffs, and (on clear days) the distant Henry Mountains
• Broad, southwest-facing views that take in layers of canyons and sky

Why It Stands Out

This is classic Canyonlands in a single frame—huge scale, clean sightlines, and multiple named landmarks visible without a hike. Photographers love the way storm light plays across the canyons, and many visitors find it less hectic than sunrise hotspots like Mesa Arch while still delivering A-list scenery.

Best Time to Visit

Sunset is the crowd favorite here: the overlook faces southwest, and low, warm light sculpts the canyons beautifully. If weather is moving through, stick around—the shifting clouds and post-storm glow can be spectacular. It’s a quick stop, so it pairs perfectly with a day of Island in the Sky viewpoints.

Wildlife & Safety

This is rattlesnake country. Stay alert around rocks and ledges, keep your distance if you see one, and give all wildlife space. The exposed setting means little natural cover; plan accordingly for sun and conditions.

Logistics

It’s a signed, official viewpoint in Island in the Sky with a short, easy, paved approach from the parking loop. Expect other visitors most of the day, but it’s typically less crowded than Mesa Arch. Many travelers combine this overlook with nearby viewpoints on the same drive.
