Overview

Franey Trail Lookout is where the hard work pays off: broad granite ledges serve up big‑sky panoramas from Cape Smokey to Ingonish, with Clyburn Brook carving the canyon far below. The vibe at the top is linger‑worthy—grab a Parks Canada red chair, catch your breath, and soak in the coast‑and‑highlands mash‑up.

What You’ll See

Expect wide‑angle views in multiple directions and two distinct lookouts worth visiting. On clear days you’ll trace the river 425 meters below and scan the Atlantic horizon; in fall the hillsides explode with color.

The Hike Up

Reaching the lookout is a stout effort on a 7.4 km/4.6 mi signed loop (2–3 hours). It climbs from roughly 95 to 430 m through hardwood and mixed forest, with rugged stretches, built stairs, roots and rocks. Sheer drop‑offs near the ledges mean keeping kids and distracted adults well back from the edges.

Wildlife & Safety

Moose, black bear and coyotes live here. Give wildlife space, never feed them, and keep dogs leashed. Pack water, snacks, sturdy footwear and a wind layer—the summit is exposed.

Logistics

The trailhead is just off the Cabot Trail north of the Clyburn River via a short access road to a small gravel lot. A valid Parks Canada pass is required. There’s a basic outhouse by the parking area, but no potable water—come self‑sufficient.

Recent seasons have seen construction with closures and detours that can turn the classic loop into a longer out‑and‑back on a gravel road. Conditions change—check Parks Canada for the latest before you go.

Best Time to Visit

• Fall for peak foliage and the clearest views.
• Summer brings the biggest crowds and bugs; arrive early (before 9 a.m.) or late (after 4 p.m.) to find parking and quieter ledges.
• Winter travel here is only for experienced hikers—ice and freeze‑thaw can make the climb treacherous.

Photo Tips

Light is kinder early and late in the day. Hit both lookouts, and bring a lens that can switch from sweeping panoramas to compressing the coastline and canyon.
