Guide
Ingonish Visitor Centre is the staffed east-side visitor centre for Cape Breton Highlands National Park, a fully accessible one-storey stop just off the Cabot Trail. It's a useful first stop if you want to get oriented before choosing what to do: you can buy a park pass or program ticket, ask about trails, facilities and weekly activities, and pick up local-services brochures. Parks Canada merchandise is available too. If you already know your route, this is a quick errand rather than a stand-alone sightseeing attraction.
Freshwater Lake Look-off is a separate stop across the Cabot Trail from the centre. The return walk is about 0.3 km (0.2 mi) and takes roughly 10 minutes, but it's short and steep. From the top, look for Ingonish Beach, Freshwater Lake, Middle Head and Cape Smokey. Take care near the top, especially with children; this walk is not described as accessible.
The current Ingonish centre opened in 2014. The older small stone visitor-centre building is a different place and now serves as the park wardens' base, so don't navigate to it when you're looking for visitor services.
