Overview
Once a true harbor, East Harbor—long called Pilgrim Lake—is now a 720‑acre back‑barrier lagoon system bordered by dunes and salt‑marsh lowlands in North Truro/Provincetown. From the Pilgrim Heights area, you get an easy, high‑ground look across the lagoon and its fringing meadows.
History in Brief
In 1868 a dike was built across the bay inlet to carry the railroad, cutting off tides and turning the harbor into a stagnant freshwater pond. A developer popularized the name “Pilgrim Lake” in the early 1900s, which stuck officially until the water body was renamed back to East Harbor in 2008. After oxygen crashes and fish kills, the Park Service and the Town of Truro opened culvert valves in 2002 to allow partial tidal exchange. Since then, salinity and estuarine life have substantially rebounded—even if it’s not a navigable harbor anymore.
What You’ll See
You’re looking at a recovering salt‑marsh/lagoon mosaic that includes Moon Meadow and Salt Meadow. Expect a mix of salt‑marsh vegetation and returning estuarine invertebrates and fishes as the system continues to heal.
Access & Amenities
The Pilgrim Heights area off US‑6 serves the overlook and nearby trail. You’ll find large paved parking, picnic tables (no grills), and seasonal vault/composting toilets. There’s no listed drinking water here, so bring your own. A trail (Pilgrim Spring Trail) departs from this area, and leashed pets are permitted on it.
