Overview
Pilgrim Spring Trail is an easy 0.7-mile loop starting at the Pilgrim Heights covered shelter in Cape Cod National Seashore. Plan on about 30 minutes. It gives you a shaded walk through recovering pine and oak woods, a bluff view over a creek, dunes and ocean, then a short historic stop at the spring memorial. The grade is moderate and includes log steps, so it takes a little more effort than the short distance suggests.

Trail guide
About a quarter mile in, the trees open at the bluff. The trail then drops on log steps to the granite memorial and climbs gradually back through the woods. It reaches the east parking area and seasonal restrooms, then the return to the covered shelter crosses the parking area and central field. The 0.3-mile figure refers to the one-way spring leg; the complete loop is about 0.7 mile. Watch for the nearby Small's Swamp and bike-trail junctions if markings are faint.
Start at the covered shelter by the west parking area. There is a picnic area at the start and a seasonal restroom near the east lot. No food service or drinking water is listed along the trail. Leashed pets are allowed. Ticks, mosquitoes and biting flies can be a nuisance in season; use repellent when needed and check for ticks after the walk.
The granite memorial marks a site understood to represent where Pilgrims drank fresh water in New England during their exploration. It is not a promise that water is flowing now. In the wider High Head area, traces of repeated human use go back at least 5,000 years. Most are stone tools, tool-making fragments and heat-cracked stone; they add context to this landscape but are not exhibits beside the trail.
