Overview
A compact loop with surprising variety, Small's Swamp drops off the Pilgrim Heights bluff into a classic glacial kettle that’s filled in to a wetland, then climbs back through pine woods. It’s an easy 0.6-mile loop (total) that takes about 20–30 minutes, with roughly 60 feet of ups and downs, short log-step pitches, and a brief boardwalk. Expect a soft, pine-needle/sandy tread and a peaceful feel—this one is usually quieter than the marquee seashore walks.
What You’ll See
From the covered picnic shelter trailhead, a sandy path leads to a bluff with views toward the outer dunes, a creek flowing from Pilgrim Lake, and the Atlantic beyond. The loop then dips to the namesake wetland, crossed on a short boardwalk, before winding through mixed coastal scrub and pine back to the start. Keep an eye out for interpretive posts and plant ID touches along the way.
Natural & Human History
The "swamp" sits in a kettle-hole basin left by a stranded block of glacial ice that melted out and later filled with sediment and vegetation. In the 1800s this area was part of a roughly 200-acre farm worked by Thomas Small and later his son, Warren; after the land was abandoned in 1922 due to depleted soils, the forest reclaimed it. People have used these bluffs and kettles far longer—Indigenous communities favored the area’s water and food resources.
Route Notes
Clockwise or counterclockwise both work, but heading counterclockwise puts the bluff viewpoints up front before dropping to the boardwalk and a short climb back. The boardwalk can be slick when wet, and the grades/steps mean the loop isn’t fully accessible.
Best Times to Hike
You can visit year‑round; the seashore is open daily roughly 6:00 AM–midnight. Golden-hour light flatters the dunes, but dawn and dusk (and warm, still days) bring heavy mosquitoes near the wetland. Breezy, cooler periods are more comfortable. This is a quick add‑on to a beach day or a leg-stretcher before/after nearby Pilgrim Spring Trail, which starts from the same lot.
