This is a quick, flat boardwalk stop along UT‑24 just east of Fruita. You’re here to view Fremont Culture petroglyphs carved high on a vertical red rock wall. It’s more of a cultural viewing walk than a hike, and that’s the point. The total walking is about 0.3 miles on wooden boardwalks with railings and viewing areas.
What You’ll See
Two short boardwalks run beneath Navajo Sandstone cliffs with interpretive signs and fixed viewing scopes. Look for anthropomorphic figures, bighorn sheep, and geometric designs etched into the cliff face. Many carvings are faint or small, so slow down and scan—once your eyes adjust, more figures emerge. Cottonwoods along the wash add a bit of shade and bird activity.
Logistics
Park in the signed Fremont Petroglyph lot on UT‑24 (about 1.1 miles east of the Visitor Center). One boardwalk leaves from the north side of the lot; another from the east end. Surfaces are flat and wheelchair/stroller friendly. Expect 10–30 minutes for a thorough look, depending on how long you linger with the scopes. No permits are needed.
Best Time to Visit
It’s open year‑round. Spring and fall are the most comfortable, but this is manageable in summer thanks to the very short walk. For visibility and photography, early morning or late afternoon light is best; overcast days can be excellent because glare drops and the engravings pop more. Midday tends to be harsher light and busier parking.
