North Fruita Overlook

Overview

Perched above the Fruita Historic District, North Fruita Overlook serves up a big panorama for a small effort. It’s reached via a short, steep spur off the Cohab Canyon Trail and opens onto a flat, pale slickrock-and-grass plateau that contrasts sharply with the red cliffs below. Expect broad views of the orchards, the Fremont River cutting through the valley, and the surrounding canyon walls.

Getting There

Hike the Cohab Canyon Trail to the signed side path for the overlooks. From the west end of Cohab Canyon you’ll gain roughly 400 feet over about a half-mile to a high plateau; a short distance farther a side trail branches to the overlooks, with the North Fruita Overlook reached by a brief spur (about 0.2 miles round trip from the junction). Some hikers report the junction signage isn’t obvious—carry a map and pay attention to cairns and signs.

What You’ll See

From the top, take in 360-degree views: the green ribbon of Fruita’s orchards and campground, the Fremont River corridor, and classic Capitol Reef cliffs. On a clear day you can pick out nearby trails and landmarks from your perch. The immediate overlook area itself is a study in contrasts—white slickrock and open prairie grasses above the red Entrada sandstone.

Wildlife & Seasonality

The Fruita area below often hosts mule deer, songbirds, and occasional wild turkeys along the river and orchards. Spring brings wildflowers, including blooming cacti along the approach. Wildlife activity is best in the cooler hours of morning and evening.

Best Time to Visit

Hit it early or late. Morning and late-afternoon light make the canyon relief pop, and you’ll avoid the midday heat on this exposed slope. Spring and fall are the sweet spots for temps; summer brings intense sun and potential afternoon thunderstorms.

Know Before You Go

• The spur is short but steep and fully exposed—bring plenty of water and sun protection.
• There are no services at the overlook. Use restrooms and refill water in the Fruita area or at the Hickman Bridge trailhead before you start.
• Trailhead parking in Fruita and at Hickman Bridge can fill quickly; start early to sidestep crowds and heat.
