South Fruita Overlook

Overview

South Fruita Overlook is a high, airy perch above the Fruita Historic District, reached by a short spur off the Cohab Canyon Trail. From roughly 400 feet above the valley floor, you look down on the orchards, the ribbon of the Fremont River, and red rock walls—classic Capitol Reef scenery without the crowds.

The Approach

Expect a punchy start: the Cohab Canyon Trail climbs steep switchbacks before easing into the canyon. A signed spur leads to the South Fruita Overlook for a final uphill push to the rim. The footing can be uneven, and there’s very little shade, so it feels tougher in heat. Hiking poles help on the steeper bits.

What You’ll See

From the rim, the panorama stretches over green pastures and orchards framed by multicolored sandstone. It’s a sweeping, unobstructed view of the Fremont River corridor and surrounding cliffs—textbook Capitol Reef.

Wildlife

You’re looking down on habitat that often hosts deer and wild turkeys in the orchards below. From the overlook itself, keep an eye out for raptors riding thermals and songbirds working the rim. Lizards are common along the warm, rocky approach.

Worth It?

It’s notably quieter than the North Fruita Overlook, which many hikers favor. If you like solitude and big views, this one delivers. If you’re short on time, know that the vistas are similar to the north side, so some consider the extra effort optional.

Best Time to Visit

Early morning and late afternoon bring cooler temperatures and the best light for photos; sunset can be especially good. Midday can be harsh and hot due to exposure. Check current park alerts and trail conditions before you go.

Practicalities

There are no services at the overlook—no water, restrooms, or picnic tables. Fill bottles and take care of logistics in Fruita (visitor center/campground area) before starting out. Bring sun protection, plenty of water, and a camera.
