Overview

Scorpion Anchorage Overlook is the bluff-top vantage just above the main landing at Santa Cruz Island. It’s the classic “first hike” for day trippers: short, straightforward, and instantly rewarding with wide-open views of the Santa Barbara Channel, the island’s rugged volcanic cliffs, and—on clear days—the mainland and neighboring islands.

What You’ll See

Expect big coastal panoramas straight away. The trail traces the rim over Scorpion Cove with sheer drop-offs, wave-carved cliffs, and sea caves below. On the water you may spot kayakers, dolphins, or even migrating whales in season. Overhead and in the shrubs, watch for the island scrub jay; at ground level, the bold little island fox often wanders near the picnic and campground areas.

Route and Effort

You’ll reach the overlook via the Cavern Point Loop, commonly described as about two miles with moderate elevation gain. The tread is generally good but exposed and can be windy. It’s a quick outing from the landing and easy to fit between ferry times.

• Island foxes are famously curious—great for photos, not for snacking. Keep food secured.
• Island scrub jays and ravens ride the updrafts along the cliffs.
• Scan the channel for dolphins and seasonal whales from this high perch.

Practicalities

There are no amenities at the overlook itself. Restrooms and the campground are down near the landing, and that’s where you’ll find potable water. There’s no food service on the island, so pack everything you need and carry out all trash. Trails near the rim run very close to drop-offs—mind your footing in gusty conditions.

Best Time to Visit

Go early or late for cooler temps, fewer people, and softer, more photogenic light over Scorpion Cove. Midday can be hot and harsh with no shade. Clear winter days can deliver far-reaching visibility; spring often adds wildflowers along the rim.
