This is Santa Cruz Island’s quick-hit headliner: a roughly 2-mile loop rising from Scorpion Anchorage to the cliffs of Cavern Point for panoramic Pacific views. Expect a short, punchy climb followed by airy bluff walking and a gentle return—big vistas for a small time commitment. It’s a true loop starting near the Scorpion Ranch Visitor Center and campground.
Hike it clockwise: climb from the Scorpion area up to Cavern Point, then follow the bluffs for a more gradual descent back toward the ranch/campground. The loop is about 2 miles total. If you’ve got more gas in the tank, continue along the Bluffs Trail to the Potato Harbor Overlook and loop back for a popular 4.5–5 mile option that usually takes 2–3 hours.
From Cavern Point you’re standing hundreds of feet above the ocean with sweeping views of Santa Cruz Island and, on clear days, the distant mainland. The bluffs are prime for spotting dolphins and seasonal whales, and the charming island fox often roams near Scorpion Ranch. You’ll pass remnants of the historic Scorpion Ranch—old ranch structures and equipment hint at the island’s past. Geology fans: you’re skirting the tops of large sea caves (including the namesake Cavern Point Cave), though they aren’t directly visible from the trail.
Call it moderate: the initial ascent is steep and can be loose in spots, but it’s short; once on top, the walking is easy. The path is fully exposed—no shade—so sun, wind, and heat are real factors. Surfaces vary from packed dirt to gravel and stone steps near the start.
Year-round, but spring and fall are the sweet spots for temperatures (and wildflowers in spring). Winters can be windy. Summer afternoons cook on these unshaded bluffs—start early for cooler temps and quieter views, or time it for a golden-hour stroll if you’re camping. Cavern Point is a favorite sunset perch.
There are no facilities on the loop. Fill bottles and use restrooms at the Scorpion Ranch/Visitor Center before heading out. Keep a respectful distance from cliff edges—drops are sheer. Secure all food and trash against the ever-curious island foxes and ravens. No pets are allowed. Footing can be loose on the initial climb; sturdy shoes help. If you’re day-tripping, plan your outing around boat schedules.
Absolutely. It’s the park’s big-view sampler—easy to reach from camp or dock, flexible to extend, and packed with coastal drama in under two miles.
No traditional parking—arrive by concession boat to Scorpion Anchorage; the loop starts near the Scorpion Ranch Visitor Center/campground.
Fully exposed bluffs with sheer drop-offs; short but steep, sometimes loose initial climb; no water or restrooms on the loop—stock up at Scorpion Ranch; secure food/trash from foxes and ravens; expect wind.
