Overview

A modern, purpose-built hub for everything bison, the Bison Center dives into the park’s free‑roaming herd and the spectacle of the annual Buffalo Roundup. It sits right along Wildlife Loop Road at the Buffalo Corrals, so it’s an easy and logical stop during your drive.

What You’ll See

• Interactive exhibits that cover bison ecology, history, and how the park manages one of the largest publicly owned herds (about 1,300–1,400 animals).
• Displays on the Buffalo Roundup and auction—excellent context if you’re visiting in the fall.
• A short prairie trail (less than a mile) starting right behind the building for a quick leg‑stretch and big‑sky views.

Why It’s Worth Your Time

This is the park’s most focused storytelling on bison—clear, hands‑on, and up to date (the center opened in 2022). If you’re doing Wildlife Loop, stop here first: staff can share recent herd locations and smart strategies for sightings, saving you time and backtracking.

Wildlife Expectations

You’re close to the corrals, so bison are the headliners—especially around roundup time. Elsewhere on the loop, keep an eye out for pronghorn, deer, coyotes, and raptors. Remember: the herd roams, so sightings ebb and flow right around the center.

Amenities

Inside you’ll find engaging exhibits, restrooms, and a gift shop with drinks, snacks, and ice‑cream novelties. There’s also a pleasant patio outside. Parking is on site. (Don’t plan on a full meal here.)

Opened in 2022, the center was built to tell the full story of Custer’s bison—from near‑extirpation to conservation success and the park’s active herd management, including the roundup and auction.

• Midday is typically the busiest, especially in summer.
