Buffalo Safari Jeep Tours

Overview

If you want the best shot at bison and other wildlife, this is the park’s signature guided experience. You’ll ride in an open-air Jeep with a pro guide who knows where the animals like to roam and how to read the landscape. The big advantage: access to interior dirt roads not open to regular traffic, so you spend more time where the wildlife actually is instead of just looping paved roads.

What You’ll See

Expect bison (the park’s herd is roughly 1,300 strong) and frequent sightings of pronghorn, deer, elk, coyotes, prairie dogs, wild turkeys, bighorn sheep, and the occasionally cheeky burros. Sunrise and evening runs tend to catch more animal activity.

How It Works

• Departures: Tours leave from Creekside Lodge at the State Game Lodge complex, with departures throughout the day (often hourly from early morning to early evening).
• Duration & Vehicles: Typically 1.5–2 hours in open-air Jeep Wranglers seating about 7 adults (8 with kids). You can book individual seats or a private Jeep.
• Combo Option: There’s also a Buffalo Safari & Chuckwagon Cookout combo that runs in the evening and lasts about 4–4.5 hours.

What It’s Like

It’s an immersive backcountry ride: windy and cool in the mornings, warm and sunny by afternoon, and often dusty. The route can be bumpy—part of the fun—but dress accordingly. Guides keep it lively with park history, wildlife behavior, and fun show-and-tell items.

Tips for the Best Experience

• Aim for sunrise or early evening for active wildlife and flattering light.
• Dress in layers and bring a light jacket even in summer.
• Pack a camera and binoculars—some critters keep their distance.
• Book early in peak season; popular times sell out.
• Check in a bit early at Creekside Lodge and use the restrooms before boarding; there are none on the tour.

If you’re short on time or want to maximize wildlife, it’s a standout experience and far more productive than just driving the public loop. The open-air feel and insider access make it memorable, especially for first-timers and families.

• Time of day: Sunrise is best for wildlife; sunset is a close second. Midday can be slower for animal activity.
• Season & crowds: Summer is busiest—reserve ahead. Cooler shoulder-season mornings can be excellent for sightings.
