This is a quiet, creek-hugging corridor that doubles as a hike and a prime fishing spot. It follows Grace Coolidge Creek between the Grace Coolidge Campground and Center Lake for about 3 miles one way (roughly 6 miles out-and-back). Think shaded forest, the sound of running water, and a string of small dams that form trouty pools.
Route & Difficulty
Start at either end: the south trailhead sits across Highway 16A from Grace Coolidge Campground; the north end is near the Center Lake swimming beach. Most of the route is easy walking, but the north end adds a moderate climb near Center Lake. Count on 16 or more creek crossings—sometimes via rocks, logs, or simple bridges—so wet feet are part of the charm, especially after rain.
Fishing Highlights
Six small dams along the creek create pools that are regularly stocked with trout, making this a go-to spot for anglers. It’s ideal for beginners and families learning the ropes, and there are plenty of places to step off, cast, or just watch fish finning in clear water.
Scenery & Wildlife
The corridor winds through bur oak, ponderosa pine, and aspen, with wildflowers in spring and early summer. You’ll hear water the whole way and pass little spillovers at the dams. Deer are common, birds are active along the riparian strip, and bison do move through this area at times—give them lots of space if you encounter them.
Practicalities
Parking is available at both ends. Restrooms are at the adjacent Grace Coolidge Campground (south) and at Center Lake (north). Expect muddy sections after storms, and know that crossings can be slick or even submerged when flows run high. Nearby options like Center Lake’s beach make a great post-hike cool-down, and the State Game Lodge area has food and supplies close by.

The creek and area honor Grace Coolidge, wife of President Calvin Coolidge, who summered here in 1927. The waterway was stocked for the presidential visit, kick-starting the trout tradition that continues today.
