Overview
Botzum is the southern gateway to the Towpath inside the park: a big, reliable trailhead parking lot with a CVSR rail stop just up the path. It’s the simplest place to start a northbound day—park, hop on the Towpath, and decide whether you want to pair it with a train ride.
What You’ll Do
- Step onto the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail and head north through the valley corridor.
- Make a mellow out-and-back to Beaver Marsh (about 2.5 miles north) for easy wildlife viewing and photos.
- Use Botzum as a launch point to connect toward Sand Run and Cascade Valley metroparks in roughly 2.5 miles.
Train + Trail, Made Easy
This station is popular with the railroad’s shuttle users—cyclists, runners, and hikers. It functions as a flag stop: be ready and visible to signal the train, and plan to arrive about 10 minutes before departures. It’s the classic one-way trick—ride the train one direction, travel the Towpath the other.
Facilities
Botzum Trailhead has a large paved lot (about 126 spaces) that the park says rarely fills. You’ll find vault/composting toilets, picnic tables, benches, interpretive panels, and trash receptacles. There are no food services, stores, or water filling stations here, so come prepared.
Wildlife
Beaver Marsh—2.5 miles north—is a standout wetland for spotting beavers and a wide range of birds and waterfowl. Bring binoculars and give yourself time to linger.
Route Notes
North from Botzum is flat and friendly. If you turn south toward Akron, expect some uphill grades—fine for most riders and runners, but it’s not pancake flat.
Best Time to Visit
Parking is generally easy, but the trail sees its heaviest use on weekend mornings and mid‑day. Weekday early mornings or late afternoons tend to be quieter and cooler. If you’re pairing with the train, let the schedule guide your timing.
Quick History
“Botzum” comes from a former canal‑era community. The site sits where the canal and later the Valley Railway shaped the corridor; the story is told on‑site through interpretive signage.
