Overview

Northampton Point River Access is the park’s new paddler-focused launch on the Cuyahoga River, created in partnership with Summit Metro Parks. It sits along Akron Peninsula Road in Cuyahoga Falls and was designed to make getting boats on and off the water straightforward without feeling like a construction zone.

What You’ll Find

Expect a paved parking lot, clear signage, and a small staging area with seating. A short, roughly 500-foot gravel path leads to the river where the launch/takeout has a gentle entry—easy on ankles and hulls. There’s a small changing room and a seasonal portable restroom available during paddling season, plus an information kiosk with river-trail details.

On the Water

This stretch of the Cuyahoga has a lively current and the usual moving-water challenges—occasional downed trees and other in-stream obstacles. Downstream sections near other access points can include more dynamic features, so this isn’t a pond-paddle; bring skills for steering and eddying out, and always check conditions before you commit.

Wildlife

Riparian wildlife is part of the draw here. Watch for great blue herons, waterfowl, turtles, and the occasional deer browsing the banks. A nearby heron rookery upstream from the access (near Akron’s wastewater plant) adds to the odds of big, prehistoric-looking birds overhead in season.

Planning & Logistics

  • The carry is real: plan for about 500 feet over gravel from the lot to the river. Pack light or bring a shoulder strap.
  • The restroom is seasonal and there’s no potable water. Fill up beforehand and plan bathroom breaks accordingly.
  • Bring standard river kit—PFD, weather layers, sun protection, and a dry bag. Conditions and flows change; check gauges and forecasts before launching.

Best Time to Visit

Aim for weekday mornings in paddling season for the smoothest parking and the calmest vibes. Early and late light are pleasant along the tree-lined banks, while midday brings harsher sun and less shade at the staging area. After heavy rain, expect changing conditions and more debris; give the river time to settle before you go.

Is It Worth It?

If you’re here to paddle, yes—this is a purpose-built, well-thought-out access that fills a long-missing gap on the Cuyahoga. If you’re just sightseeing, it’s more utility than spectacle; save your time for nearby trails and overlooks.
