Bath Road Heronry is a paved pullout where you can watch great blue herons nesting in trees across Bath Road. A wayside panel adds context, and the birds can be seen and heard from your vehicle. It is a brief birdwatching stop, with the fenced nesting area on the south side of the road.
Nesting activity usually begins around mid-February and continues through June. March and April can be especially rewarding: activity is underway, and bare branches make nests easier to pick out. Watch for courtship, nest repair, calls and adults tending young. Activity shifts over time, so a bird or nest count is never guaranteed. Binoculars or a longer camera lens help with detail.
Use the paved pullout on Bath Road between Akron Peninsula and Riverview roads, then look south. The road separates the pullout from the fenced colony, so keep traffic in mind and treat this as a roadside stop; you can watch from your vehicle. The pullout is listed as wheelchair accessible, though the pedestrian crossing layout is not described.
Early Bath Road nests occupied five sycamores. Volunteer monitoring recorded 176 nests here in 2003, but storms later damaged key nesting branches and trees, and herons can shift colonies. That peak is a historical count, not the number nesting here now. The valley's first recorded nesting pair appeared near Station Road Bridge in 1985.
