Watch junctions—multiple interconnecting trails make wrong turns easy. Expect roots, occasional mud, and mosquitoes in early summer; keep distance from any wildlife.
Why hike it
A quick, easy sampler of Denali’s entrance area, this about-1.7-mile total loop wanders through boreal forest with pleasant stretches along lively Riley Creek. Expect the sound of moving water, a few peeks at surrounding hills, and photo stops near the railroad trestle and a small wooden bridge. It’s family-friendly, close to camp, and a solid leg-stretcher if you’ve just arrived.
What to expect
The tread is packed dirt with roots and occasional mud after rain, and the elevation gain is minimal (roughly a couple hundred feet). The loop is well signed but threads through a busy web of paths by the campground and Visitor Center—download the park’s entrance-trails map and watch junction signs to stay on the loop. If you want more creek time and better views, take the right fork beyond the railroad trestle; the left fork stays deeper in the trees. For a longer outing, connect to the McKinley Station Trail or continue toward the Triple Lakes Trail to reach the suspension bridge over Riley Creek (beyond the main loop).
Is it for you?
If you’re after big alpine vistas or solitude, this isn’t it—head deeper into the park. But for an easy, low-commitment stroll with running water, forest shade, and convenient facilities, it’s a win. Bring bug repellent in early summer, and pack a light layer—weather flips quickly here.
