About Riley Creek Campground

Riley Creek is the park’s front-country base camp: a big, wooded campground just inside the entrance at Mile 0.45 of Denali Park Road. It’s the most convenient place to pitch a tent or park an RV if you want quick access to the visitor center, trail network, and buses heading deeper into the park.

Tips for visiting Riley Creek Campground

Reserve early—summer dates often sell out, especially June to August.
Light sleepers should pack earplugs; highway and train noise carry.
Using the Camper Transit Bus? Park overnight at the Riley Creek Day Use/Overnight lot and catch the Riley Creek stop five minutes before the Bus Depot stop.
Expect back-in sites and no hookups; use the mercantile’s RV dump/fill.
Trails to the visitor center, Horseshoe Lake, and Mount Healy start near camp—walk instead of driving.

Best time to go

This campground is popular and often sells out in peak season (June–August). Reservations are strongly recommended. It typically opens earlier and stays available later than most other park campgrounds, giving you more shoulder-season flexibility.

Amenities you actually use

The Riley Creek Mercantile is the campground’s hub: buy essentials and snacks, grab a shower, do laundry, and use the RV dump/fill. Restrooms include both vault toilets in loops and buildings with running water near the mercantile area. Seasonal Wi‑Fi is available near the store (expect variable speeds). Each site has standard picnic tables.

Trails to popular hikes like Mount Healy Overlook and Horseshoe Lake start right from (or near) the campground area, so you can leave the car and walk.

You won’t see the creek from your pad—the water is a short stroll away through the trees—so expect a forest setting rather than creekside views. Compared to Denali’s more remote campgrounds, sites here are closer together and the vibe is more developed.

This is the easiest campground for bus logistics. Camper Transit Buses stop at the Riley Creek Day Use/Campground stop, and if you’re leaving your vehicle overnight for a bus trip, use the Riley Creek Day Use/Overnight lot (not the Bus Depot). Free shuttle service connects common entrance-area destinations, and the visitor center is a pleasant walk away on signed paths.
