About Backcountry Information Center

If you’re backpacking Denali, this is your first stop. The Backcountry Information Center is the park’s in-person hub for permits, safety orientation, and real-time advice from backcountry rangers. It sits by the park entrance on the Denali Bus Depot campus, a quick hop from Riley Creek Campground.

Best time to go

Permits are issued in person only, typically mid-May through late September, and no earlier than the day before your trip. Summer mornings can be busy—plan at least an hour for the full process and arrive early for the best unit availability. Flexibility is your friend; come with multiple route options.

Logistics on site

The BIC shares the Bus Depot campus, with parking and restrooms nearby. It’s not a trailhead and there’s no food service inside, but you’re close to entrance-area facilities and Riley Creek Campground for staging.
