Why go
A quick, crowd-pleasing sampler of Denali near the park entrance: a short forest descent to a tranquil, horseshoe-shaped lake, shoreline views of beaver dams and lodges, and a bonus overlook of the roaring Nenana River. Expect an easy-going loop once you’re at the lake, with benches and plenty of spots to linger and watch for wildlife.
Route and distance
The standard outing is about 2.0 miles total and takes 1–2 hours. From the trailhead near Mile 1 of Denali Park Road by the Alaska Railroad crossing, you’ll drop roughly 250 feet on a steep hill to reach the lake, then follow a gentle loop around the shoreline before climbing back out the same hill. If the small trailhead lot is full, start from the Denali Visitor Center: the Bike/Roadside paths or the Taiga Trail connect to Horseshoe Lake and can add roughly 0.5–1.0 mile round-trip depending on how you mix approaches.
Heads up
This is popular, so start early for more quiet. The short but steep climb back out can feel punchy, and the natural dirt surface gets muddy after rain. Mosquitoes can be fierce in early summer—bring repellent. You’re in bear country: stay alert, make noise, and consider carrying bear spray. Pets are not allowed on this trail, and the grade/surface make it unsuitable for wheelchairs or strollers. Best season is roughly May–September when it’s typically snow-free.
