South Coaling Docks are the surviving pilings of a late-1800s Navy coaling pier on Garden Key. The warehouses and pier structures are gone; weathered posts remain in and above the water beside a dredged channel. This is an open-water snorkeling stop, not a walk-up dock. I'd plan on it if you want to spend time in the water and see the old harbor remains close up.

What the Navy left behindThe Navy built the coaling facilities to refuel ships.

The Navy built the coaling facilities to refuel ships. A powerful hurricane destroyed the warehouses and piers, and the Navy chose not to rebuild them. The exposed pilings are the visible trace of that working harbor, now sheltering fish along the channel's deep edge.

The park lists grouper, tarpon, barracuda and the occasional shark here, along with smaller fish and coral. Those are possibilities, not a promise; the clear draw is swimming around the old structure and seeing what has gathered there. For a photo, frame several pilings together so their repeating rows show how much of the pier remains.

A described snorkel route starts at South Beach and rounds Garden Key's south end; the dinghy beach beside the docks is not for swimming. Confirm the safe entry and current conditions before setting out, since access and water conditions at the pilings aren't verified. Never snorkel alone, don't touch coral, fish or historic remains, and don't fish here. An approved dive flag is required outside designated snorkel areas. There are no lifeguards, and the nearest medical help is 70 miles away. Ferry and seaplane visitors can snorkel at Garden Key, but those services can't carry compressed scuba tanks.
