Cannon Mountain is the park’s big, craggy high point (4,080 ft) with a fast track to the top via its aerial tram and a short Rim Trail to an observation tower. On clear days, the vistas stretch over the Notch and the Franconia Range—this is the easy way to score sweeping White Mountain views without a long grind.
Cannon blends effortless access with legit mountain feel. Ride the tram, step onto breezy granite ledges, then wander a quick loop to overlooks. When the tram is operating, you’ll find restrooms, a café, a bar, and a 360-degree deck at the summit station. On some days you might even spot gliders circling on the thermals.
Head for the Tram base area (Exit 34B). Hiker parking is available just beyond the tram lot if you’re earning the summit on foot.
Cannon is notorious for wind and fast-changing weather—expect it to be colder up high. In wet or icy shoulder seasons, traction can be essential, and slick ledge will slow you down. Start early during foliage season; this area is popular.
When the tram is running, the summit station has restrooms, the observation deck, and food/drink. Off‑season, comfort stations in the park may be closed, and some gates can be shut. Echo Lake Beach bathrooms are seasonal and locked at night. Pets are limited to designated dog‑walk areas near the Tramway and Flume parking lots.
Cannon’s pinkish cliffs are Conway Granite shaped by glacial ice that carved the U‑shaped Notch. The mountain’s cliff once held the famous Old Man of the Mountain, which collapsed on May 3, 2003. Cannon also has deep ski roots, including early tramway history and classic racing trails.
