Perched on the true summit of Cannon Mountain, this simple tower dishes out the kind of 360-degree panorama you usually have to earn with a big hike. On clear days you can scan New Hampshire’s Presidential Range, Franconia Ridge, and even into Maine, Vermont, New York, and Canada.

Getting There

Most visitors ride the aerial tramway in the warm season, then follow the short Rim Trail loop from the summit station to the tower (about a 15‑minute walk). If you’re hiking, trails like Kinsman Ridge and Mittersill‑Cannon connect to the summit area. The tower itself is listed as open 24 hours; the tram typically runs daytime hours in summer and early fall, and service can pause for weather.

What You’ll See

From the top platform, it’s all big‑sky views: Franconia Notch spread below, Echo and Profile Lakes glinting, and serrated ridgelines in every direction. Photography is excellent when the air is clear—foliage season is a stunner.

Amenities and Logistics

There are no facilities in the tower. Restrooms, a cafeteria/bar (the 4080 Café), and running water are in the summit tram building when the tram is operating. Pets aren’t allowed on the tram or in immediate tram facilities.

Conditions and Safety

Cannon is notorious for wind—pack a shell even on sunny days. The tower requires climbing several flights of stairs, and footing on the short summit paths can be rocky and breezy.

Best Time to Visit

Early morning or late afternoon for softer light and fewer people.
Peak foliage weekends are gorgeous but busy—reserve tram tickets in advance.
Sunrise/sunset are magical, but outside tram hours you’ll need to hike.

Heads‑Up for 2025–2027

After the 2025 season, the tram is slated for a roughly two‑year replacement. Expect limited or no summit building facilities during that period unless the park provides alternatives; tower access by hiking should still be possible when conditions allow.
