This is the classic postcard perch above Echo Lake—the Artists Bluff overlook—with Cannon Mountain’s ski trails staring you down across the water. It’s a quick climb for a huge view, the kind of stop that turns a beach day into a remember-it-all-year moment.

The Short Hike

The loop to Artists Bluff is generally easy-to-moderate, but don’t underestimate a few rocky, steep bits. Expect some scrambling in spots and slick ledge when conditions are wet or icy. There’s an optional spur up Bald Mountain if you want a wider panorama; it’s steeper and more technical and not ideal for small kids. Dogs are commonly seen on the trail—keep them leashed and ready for rough rock.

Seasons and What To Expect

Summer is beach season down at the lake, and services ramp up mid-June. If you’re here for foliage, early to mid‑October is prime and wildly popular. In winter and shoulder seasons, weather can flip fast in the notch; traction helps on icy ledge and packed snow. Road noise is noticeable at the shoreline, but from the overlook the sweeping view usually steals the show.

Best Time to Visit

For photography, early morning and late afternoon both work, but calm late‑day light can deliver mirror‑like lake reflections—around 4:30 pm has been a sweet spot on still days. Weekdays beat weekends for elbow room, and starting early helps year‑round. October is the busiest month across the notch, so plan accordingly.

Parking and Logistics

Access is straightforward off I‑93; hikers typically use the Cannon Mountain/overflow lots, where porta‑potties are often available. On hot summer weekends the beach lot fills and may have entry controls, so do the overlook first and then head for the water. The beach operates carry‑in/carry‑out in the off‑season, and pets aren’t allowed at the beach itself (designated dog areas are near the Tramway and Flume lots). If you want boat rentals, snacks, or a post‑hike swim, those are seasonal down at the lakeshore.

Make It a Perfect Combo

Hike the overlook for the view, then cool off at Echo Lake or rent a kayak/pedal boat when the beach services are running. Late‑day light plus a quick paddle is a hard combo to beat.
