Artists Bluff Trail

Overview

A compact crowd‑pleaser, this 1.4–1.5 mile total loop packs big scenery fast. Expect rocky, rooty footing and a few short, steep pitches on your way to the Artists Bluff ledges—the classic overlook of Echo Lake framed by Cannon Mountain and Franconia Ridge. Add the quick spur to Bald Mountain for broader, often less‑crowded panoramas and a touch of easy scrambling.

Route Options

You can hike the loop in either direction. Many hikers prefer counterclockwise to hit the Artists Bluff viewpoint sooner and avoid the steepest downhills later. The Bald Mountain spur is short but steeper and rewards you with sweeping views of Mt. Cannon, Mt. Lafayette, and the length of the notch. There’s also a shortcut from near the Cannon Mountain RV Park that reaches the bluff quickly, though it’s steeper right away and best if you’re short on time.

Parking and Wayfinding

Use the large dirt hiker lot off NH‑18 across from the Cannon Mountain base area. Do not park at the Echo Lake Beach lot (no hiker parking). From the shortcut start near the RV Park, stay right at the fork for the bluff; the final turn to the ledge is an unmarked herd path—easy to stride past if you’re chatting. Stay on the loop to return to your car rather than dropping out to the highway.

What to Expect

This is a quick-hit hike with uneven, rocky tread and a few brief scrambles near Bald Mountain. Ledge rock can be slick after rain or when covered with leaves. It’s popular—especially during fall foliage—so expect company at the viewpoints and be patient on the ledges.

Best Times to Hike

Sunrise or sunset on weekdays gives you the best chance at elbow room and soft light. Fall color typically peaks in mid‑October, drawing big crowds. Bring layers year‑round—the ledges catch wind—and consider traction in icy shoulder‑season conditions.

Safety and Etiquette

Wear sturdy footwear with good grip and watch footing near drop‑offs. In winter or shoulder seasons, microspikes can make the steeper sections more comfortable. Drones are not permitted to take off or land within New Hampshire State Parks. As always, pack out all trash.
