Bald Mountain

Overview

Bald Mountain is the quick-hit viewpoint above Echo Lake with outsized scenery. In roughly 0.6 miles round trip and about 242 feet of gain, you pop onto open ledges looking straight across to Cannon Mountain and down the throat of Franconia Notch.

Trail Experience

From the big dirt hiker lot on NH 18, follow signs for Bald Mountain/Artist’s Bluff. The path climbs quickly on roots and rocks. A short spur to the summit finishes with easy, non‑technical ledge scrambling—hands helpful, exposure mild, views major. Return the same way, or continue on signed paths to link Artist’s Bluff for a longer loop (commonly around 1.5 miles total) with more ledgy lookouts.

What You’ll See

Expect sweeping looks at Cannon Mountain, Echo Lake, and the Notch. On clear days the layered peaks frame classic White Mountains vistas from a compact summit perch.

Parking & Facilities

Park in the large dirt lot off Route 18 across from the Cannon base area; it’s the straightforward choice for this hike. Do not use the Echo Lake Beach lot for hiking. Note that the big hiker lot has no restrooms. If you need facilities, the nearby Cannon Mountain RV Park lot on Rt 18 has restrooms (availability can be seasonal).

Season & Conditions

Wet rock here is slick—skip the ledges in heavy rain or icing. In winter, microspikes are often necessary, and snowshoes can be useful after storms. The summit ledge is exposed; pack a wind layer.

Best Time to Visit

Start early for easier parking and fewer people. Sunset is popular on clear days but can be windy and cold on the ledge; bring layers. Fall color pops from this vantage when the hillsides light up.
