Overview
A tall, staircase-style waterfall at the end of a longer day hike, Florence Falls rewards patience with power and solitude. It’s frequently called one of the prettiest waterfalls in the park, but it doesn’t draw the crowds that swarm the roadside cascades.
Route at a Glance
Most hikers start from Jackson Glacier Overlook on Going‑to‑the‑Sun Road. The trail drops about 600 feet in the first mile to Reynolds Creek, passes Deadwood Falls, then climbs gently up-valley. Mirror Pond appears around 3 miles with views toward Citadel and Dusty Star. At roughly 4.2 miles, a signed spur peels off; follow it about 0.75 miles to the base of Florence Falls. Plan on roughly 9.5–10 miles round trip and 4.5–5 hours moving time for most hikers.
If you prefer gentler grades, starting from the St. Mary Falls trailhead adds about 0.7 miles overall but shaves roughly 300 feet of cumulative up-and-down.
What You’ll See
Expect mostly forested singletrack with rushing water never far away. Deadwood Falls makes a great snack stop early on, and Mirror Pond offers big mountain views before you enter the brushier spur to Florence. At the falls, the viewing area is small, close, and misty—dramatic but tight.
Trail Conditions to Expect
The spur to the waterfall is often overgrown (thimbleberry and other brush can be head-high in late season). After rain or snowmelt, vegetation soaks legs and shoes, and there can be muddy patches. Long pants are smart, and a wide‑angle lens helps capture the full height. A small tripod is handy at the shaded base.
Wildlife & Safety
The trail passes through thimbleberry patches—prime bear habitat—so carry bear spray and know how to use it. This is backcountry-style hiking: bring the essentials, extra layers, and water treatment, and expect variable mountain weather.
Facilities & Logistics
There are no facilities at the falls. A vault toilet sits at Reynolds Creek Backcountry Campground just past the suspension bridge, about 1.3–1.5 miles from the start. Parking at Jackson Glacier Overlook is modest and can fill by mid‑morning. Dogs are not allowed on park trails. Depending on the season, vehicle reservations for Going‑to‑the‑Sun Road may apply.
Best Time to Visit
Aim for the snow‑free season. Start early to snag parking, enjoy cooler temps, and minimize brushing against wet vegetation. With the base often in shade and spray in the air, bright overcast or diffuse light works well for photos.
