Pros & cons
PROS
- Early bonus stop at Deadwood Falls breaks up the outbound descent
- Mirror Pond viewpoint offers big peak views and good moose odds
CONS
- Overgrown spur to the falls can be head-high and slow going
- Tight, misty viewing area makes lingering and photography tricky
Park at Jackson Glacier Overlook on Going-to-the-Sun Road (larger lot) or at the Saint Mary Falls trailhead. Both are served by the park shuttle when operating.
Expect dense overgrowth on the spur, wet/muddy tread, and limited footing near the falls. You’ll finish with a steep climb back to the car. This is prime grizzly habitat—carry bear spray and check current trail status.
Overview
If you like quieter corners of Glacier and don’t mind some brush, Florence Falls delivers a gorgeous, stair-step cascade at the end of a long forest stroll. From Jackson Glacier Overlook, it’s roughly 9.8–10 miles total out-and-back with around 1,000–1,200 feet of cumulative elevation gain. The kicker: you lose about 600–665 feet in the first mile-plus, which you’ll pay back at the very end.
Route snapshot
From Jackson Glacier Overlook, descend to Reynolds Creek, passing bonus scenery at Deadwood Falls about 1.1 miles in. Cross the suspension bridge and continue through mixed forest. Around 3 miles, a break in the trees opens to Mirror Pond with big views of peaks like Mount Jackson, Gunsight Mountain, Citadel, Dusty Star, and Fusillade—also a solid wildlife-spotting zone. About 4 miles from the start, a signed spur peels off to Florence Falls; follow it roughly three-quarters of a mile to the base. The viewing area is tight and often misty, but the waterfall is a beauty.
What to expect
Much of this hike is shaded singletrack with occasional mud and wet vegetation; long pants are smart. The spur to the falls is frequently overgrown—sometimes chest- to head-high brush that can hide holes, roots, and downed limbs. The base has limited space to linger, and mist can make photography tricky without a wide lens and steady hand. Despite those quirks, the falls themselves are among the park’s prettiest.
Alternatives and add‑ons
Prefer a gentler final climb? Start from the Saint Mary Falls trailhead instead. It adds about 0.7–1.2 miles total but reduces the steep end-of-day ascent by roughly 300 feet. If you’ve got extra gas, Gunsight Lake sits about 2.3 miles beyond the Florence Falls junction (add 4.6 miles round trip) for bigger alpine payoff.
Best time to hike
Early summer through midseason usually brings stronger flow at the falls and, often, less oppressive brush on the spur. Mornings give calmer light at Mirror Pond and cooler temps for the climb back to the car. Weekdays help with parking and solitude. Always check current trail status—closures for bear activity do happen.
Safety and wildlife
This is prime grizzly country: travel in a group, make noise, and carry bear spray. The dense spur vegetation can limit visibility—take it slow. Expect wet, brushy legs from dew or recent rain, and remember the day ends with a sustained uphill back to the overlook.
