Overview

If you’re heading below the rim, this is your command center. The Backcountry Information Center is where rangers help you plan smart, safe itineraries and where you pick up required permits for overnight trips.

Location & Logistics

Set in Grand Canyon Village on Backcountry Road, it’s steps from Lot D, a short walk to the rim, the Bright Angel Trailhead, and the Hermit Road (Red Route) shuttle. Lot D has room for 150 cars plus 30 RV/bus spaces and is commonly used for overnight hiker parking.

What’s Unique Here

• Last-minute/walk-in permits: your best in-park shot at snagging a coveted site when plans are fluid.
• On-the-ground intel: rangers share current conditions, closures, weather, and route options you won’t get from a generic guide.

Hours and How It Works

Open daily 8 am–12 pm and 1–5 pm. You can submit permit requests in person, by fax, or by mail; timing matters, and getting your request in on the first eligible day greatly improves your odds. For last-minute openings, contact the office directly. Expect fees for backcountry permits (per permit plus a per-person, per-night charge below the rim); confirm current rates at the desk.

Facilities

You’ll find restrooms and plenty of parking right at the building. The office posts current closures and alerts—recent examples include long-term closures like the River Trail and Plateau Point Trail through September 2025 for waterline work.

Smart Starts

• Starting South Kaibab early? Use the Hikers’ Express shuttle from this area for a smooth launch.
• Bring alternate itineraries—being flexible often turns a no into a yes.
• There’s occasionally a “leftover fuel” shelf from departing hikers; handy if you’re in a pinch, but don’t count on it.

Best Time to Visit

Arrive before opening (especially midweek) for the best walk-in permit odds. Spring and fall see the highest demand; lines build fast by late morning. Midday tends to be busiest; late afternoon can work if you’re checking on next-day availability.
