Overview

This is the mellow Colter Bay classic: an easy loop of about 3.2 miles total that links Heron Pond and Swan Lake from the Hermitage Point Trailhead at the south end of the Colter Bay Visitor Center parking area. Expect minimal elevation change (~130 feet), well‑maintained singletrack, and a relaxed pace that works for families and casual hikers.

What You’ll See

You’ll wander through cool lodgepole pine forest, open meadows, and wetland edges with tranquil, reflective water. From spots near Heron Pond and along the Colter Bay side of the loop, you’ll catch standout views of Mount Moran rising over Jackson Lake. The ponds themselves are lively: watch for swans, geese, and other waterfowl, plus the possibility of beaver, moose, elk, and deer.

Trail Notes

The path is mostly level with a gentle grade and some roots, rocks, and occasionally muddy stretches depending on season. Junctions in the Hermitage Point network come quickly—if you stop paying attention, it’s easy to drift toward Hermitage Point instead of closing the loop, so keep an eye on signs and carry a map or track. Pets aren’t allowed on park trails, and this route is an unpaved natural surface (not wheelchair or stroller accessible).

Best Time to Hike

Spring through fall is prime. This loop shines in shoulder seasons when higher trails are still snowed in, and it’s a solid choice on unsettled weather days thanks to ample tree cover. For wildlife activity and calm water reflections, go at dawn or dusk; mid‑day offers easier parking and fewer bugs, but harsher light for photos.

Wildlife and Safety

This wetland corridor is wildlife‑rich. Give animals space and carry bear spray—bears and large ungulates move through the area. Swan Lake sometimes has seasonal closures to protect nesting birds, which can truncate the loop; check current conditions before you go and be prepared to adjust your route.

Logistics

Park at Colter Bay and start from the Hermitage Point Trailhead by the Visitor Center’s south lot. Restrooms and food are available in Colter Bay Village, making this an easy add‑on to a lake day or a recovery walk after bigger hikes.
