Lunch Tree Hill Trail

Overview

This is the park’s fastest big-view payoff. The Lunch Tree Hill Trail is a short, paved interpretive walk that climbs from the back lawn of Jackson Lake Lodge to a hilltop with commanding views of the entire Teton Range, Jackson Lake, and the Willow Flats wetland below. It’s a 0.5-mile total lollipop loop (round trip), with about 100 feet of gain—brief, family-friendly, and perfect when you’re short on time.

Route and Highlights

From the lodge’s north-side lawn/patio, follow the signed path up a short but moderately steep pitch (around a 10% grade). The pavement keeps footing easy. Along the way, interpretive signs touch on local wildlife, geology, and the area’s conservation story. The summit hosts a rock and plaque commemorating a 1926 picnic shared by Horace Albright and John D. Rockefeller, Jr.—a moment that helped spark the land purchases leading to the creation of Grand Teton National Park. Many people simply go up to the top and return the same way for maximum views; the full loop drops through a small aspen stand before rejoining the start.

Scenery and Wildlife

Your vantage is ideal for scanning Willow Flats—prime habitat for elk, moose, and a variety of birds—especially at dawn or dusk. On clear days the Teton skyline dominates the horizon beyond Jackson Lake. Bring a small pair of binoculars; you’ll use them.

Best Time to Hike

Spring through fall is the sweet spot when the path is typically snow-free. Early morning and golden hour offer the best light on the Tetons and your highest odds of wildlife activity. Midday can feel harsh and less photogenic, but the view is still impressive.

Know Before You Go

• Surface and grade: paved and easy underfoot, but the initial incline is moderately steep and can be challenging for some users with mobility concerns.
• Time: most visitors spend 20–45 minutes here, including photo and sign-reading stops.
• Rules: no pets on this trail. No special permit is required for day hiking beyond standard park entry.
• Safety: this area sees regular bear activity; carry bear spray, give wildlife plenty of space, and check current advisories before you go.
