Colter Bay Visitor Center

This is Grand Teton’s northern visitor center on Jackson Lake, beside Colter Bay Marina. It’s a good short stop for ranger help, exhibits, the park film and a wide look over the water. The center is seasonal, so check opening dates before planning around indoor services or the summer artist program.

The entrance has a ramp and three steps; public restrooms are in the breezeway. The shop is inside. Food is a separate stop in Colter Bay Village, where restaurants and a general store are nearby. Parking is nearby, and the wider Colter Bay hub gets busy in summer.

The long, low board-and-batten building opens into a pine-finished lobby. The auditorium is to the left; the ranger desk and artist area are farther right, with exhibits and the bookstore nearby. It’s an easy place to sort out a route, watch the park film and browse without making a full day of it.

A glass-backed lobby opens onto a large deck above the bay, with benches along the railing and stairs down to the shoreline. Look across Colter Bay Marina and Jackson Lake toward Mount Moran and the northern Teton peaks. Morning often brings calmer water and clearer reflections, though conditions change.

The Indigenous Arts and Cultural Demonstration Program has operated since the mid-1970s. In summer, visiting artists demonstrate painting, weaving, pottery, beadwork and musical-instrument making, and offer finished work for sale. The program grew from the building’s history as a museum with the David T. Vernon collection of Indigenous art.

It’s a late-1950s Mission 66 visitor center, set low on the sloping shore so tall picture windows frame Jackson Lake. A 2012 renovation brought back elements of the original design.

Lakeshore Trail and the loops to Heron Pond and Swan Lake start in the surrounding Colter Bay area, not inside the center. The marina, campground, cabins, general store and restaurants are also part of the village. Allow extra time if you’re combining the center with a walk, boat trip or meal.
