Aire River Lookout

Overview

Also known as the Aire River Escarpment Lookout, this clifftop perch sits on the Great Ocean Walk between Cape Otway and the Aire River mouth. It looks straight across the Hordern Vale wetlands, the river estuary and the Southern Ocean—big views for a modest effort.

What You’ll See

Expect wide coastal panoramas, the looping Aire River and bird‑rich wetlands below. On clear winter days you may spot whales cruising offshore, while the river flats often host busy birdlife.

Getting There

Most walkers start at the Aire River Bridge near the East/West campgrounds and follow the track to the escarpment. The Aire River Escarpment Lookout Walk is about 4.2 km return and typically takes 2–2.5 hours. There are toilets at the campgrounds but none at the lookout itself; bring water and supplies.

Trail Pairings

If you want more viewpoints, pair this with the separate roadside Castle Cove Lookout nearby—it’s a quick stop with different angles over the river mouth.

Best Time to Visit

Spring and autumn bring milder temperatures and wildflowers. Summer can be hot and very exposed; winter can be wild and windy but offers dramatic seas and the best chance of whale sightings (June–September). Aim for early morning or late afternoon for softer light and fewer walkers.

Wildlife

Along the river and dunes you might encounter prolific birdlife and, occasionally, koalas in nearby trees. Echidnas and long‑nosed bandicoots leave small diggings that can be ankle‑twisters on sandy sections—watch your footing, especially at dawn or dusk.

Safety & Etiquette

Dogs aren’t permitted. Cliffs are unstable—stay behind barriers and well back from edges. Snakes are possible in warmer months; keep to formed tracks. If you venture to nearby beaches, treat them as unpatrolled and hazardous—assess conditions carefully and avoid swimming in strong surf.

Current Notes

As of November 26, 2025, Aire River East Campground is closed due to waterlogged conditions through the end of November; check Parks Victoria for updates before you go. Roads can be muddy after rain, particularly Hordern Vale Road.
