Perched above one of the Otways’ rawest stretches of coast, Johanna Beach Lookout is about big sky, booming surf, and the feeling of being a long way from the crowds. It’s a simple stop—just a signed lookout with parking and nearby walking tracks—but the payoff is classic Southern Ocean drama.

What You'll See

Expect sweeping views over a broad, surf‑pounded beach framed by dunes and headlands. On clear days, the horizon seems endless; in stormy weather, it’s all whitecaps and mood. This is a fabulous vantage for spotting passing dolphins and, in the cooler months, migrating whales offshore.

Know Before You Go

Facilities are minimal: bring your own drinking water and everything you need for a short coastal stop. Dogs are not permitted, and the day‑use area is just that—no camping here (camping is available nearby at Johanna Beach Campground). Mobile reception is patchy to nonexistent, so download maps and plans before you arrive.

Safety First

This is powerful surf country. Rips and rough conditions are common, so treat it as a viewpoint and beach‑walk destination rather than a swimming spot. Cliffs and rocks can be unstable or slippery—stay on formed tracks and behind fences.

Wildlife & Birdlife

From the lookout and nearby tracks, keep an eye out for dolphins year‑round and whales during cooler months. The coastal scrub and forest edges also support interesting birdlife—bring binoculars if that’s your thing.

Pair It With

If you’re stretching your legs, short walks from the area link into sections of the Great Ocean Walk for more big‑view coastline. Inland, the park’s rainforest gullies and waterfalls make an easy add‑on for a full day in the Otways.
