Castle Cove Lookout

Castle Cove Lookout is a roadside viewpoint on the Great Ocean Road near Glenaire, with a viewing deck above the cove and Southern Ocean. It’s an easy pause for a beach-and-headland view; some visitors find it modest beside other coastal stops, so I’d fold it into the drive rather than make a special detour. Walk the short path from the parking area to the deck. The beach is reached by a separate set of steps.

From the deck, you can see the sandy curve of Castle Cove below scrub-covered headlands, with surf rolling onto the shore. Turn inland too: the green valley gives you another sweep of landscape. For a photo, include the cove and headland together so the shape of the coast stays in the frame.

The lookout sits on the Great Ocean Walk, a long coastal route between Apollo Bay and the Twelve Apostles. It’s a natural pause for walkers, while road visitors can see the main view with little walking. The Aire River-to-Johanna Beach section passes Castle Cove and is a substantial day stage, so check the route and your transport plan before treating it as a short out-and-back walk.

The pale coastal cliffs expose visible layers of sedimentary rock. From above, you can see the bands along the shore and where the surf meets them; the separate beach descent offers a closer look at the rocky edge.
