Triplet Falls Loop

Overview

A classic rainforest loop to one of the park’s standout waterfalls, this track packs a lot into a short distance. The loop is roughly 1.1 miles total (about 1.8 km) with around 68 m of climbing, and typically takes 30–60 minutes. Boardwalks and well-formed steps thread through cool-temperate rainforest to elevated platforms overlooking the three arms of Triplet Falls.

Trail Notes

Set out from the signed Triplet Falls & Little Aire Falls car park and follow the loop into dense fern gullies beneath towering Mountain Ash. Interpretive signs explain the area’s ecology and its timber history; you’ll pass relics from the old mill and tramway (think log carts and track fragments) that give the walk more depth than “just a waterfall.” Short spurs lead to sturdy viewing platforms where spray and mist are part of the show—use the handrails, especially after rain. Expect many stairs and some uneven, sometimes muddy sections despite the boardwalks.

Best Time to Hike

It’s walkable year‑round, but flows are strongest after rain and through late autumn to winter (roughly May–September). Mornings or weekdays are your best bet for quieter platforms and softer, even light for photos. The forest stays cool and damp; pack a light layer and rain shell.

Know Before You Go

This is a day-use walking track with no dogs, no camping, no fires, and no bikes, horses, or firearms. Be alert for slippery surfaces, snakes, and the usual risk of falling limbs—avoid visiting in strong winds. Increased soil digging by short‑beaked echidnas and long‑nosed bandicoots can create ankle‑twisting trip hazards, especially at dawn/dusk; stick to formed paths and don’t disturb wildlife. As of late 2025 there are various closures and advisories elsewhere in the park (e.g., Kalimna Tramline link walk and Cora Lynn Cascades track), which don’t directly affect this loop—still, check Parks Victoria’s current notices before you go. Accredited assistance dogs are welcome under park entry requirements.

Extras

From the same car park you can add the separate, longer Little Aire Falls Track if you want more time under the trees. If you’re making a day of it, the nearby Otway Fly Treetop walk pairs well with this loop.
