What to Expect

• A brief, lit tunnel with a right-hand curve and steady traffic. Headlights are recommended, and the echo inspires plenty of honking—fun for some, grating for others.
• No services at the tunnel itself and no dedicated parking. The nearest practical stop is Morton Overlook, a small roadside pull-off that fills quickly around sunset.

Why Go

If you’re already cruising Newfound Gap Road for views, the tunnel is a fun, blink-and-you’re-through feature that adds character to the drive. The real payoff is combining it with a stop at Morton Overlook for golden-hour color and layered ridgelines.

Practicalities

• There are no restrooms, water, or trash cans at the tunnel or the overlook. Use visitor centers on either side of the mountain before you head up.
• The park requires a parking tag if you stop more than 15 minutes, which applies when you linger at nearby overlooks.
• Cell service along US‑441 is hit-or-miss; download maps ahead of time. Newfound Gap Road can see temporary closures, especially in winter weather.

Wildlife

Drivers occasionally report seeing elk and wild turkeys along US‑441. Enjoy from a distance and never stop in the roadway or approach wildlife.

Best Time to Visit

• For photos: pair the tunnel with a Morton Overlook sunset; arrive 45–60 minutes early if you want a spot at the overlook and stay 10–15 minutes after sunset for lingering color.
• For a quieter pass-through: late morning or early afternoon on weekdays sees lighter traffic. Early evening brings more headlights (and honks), and it’s not great for stargazing until much later at night.
