Shaw Grave Gap

Shaw Grave Gap is a small, historic stop tucked above US 129 near Deal’s Gap. It marks the grave of Bas Shaw, who was killed around 1863–1864 during the Civil War era connected to the Kirkland Raiders. Getting There

You’ll reach it from a pull-off on the famed US 129—better known as the Tail of the Dragon—about 6.5 miles past the Tennessee/North Carolina line near Deal’s Gap. From the pull-off, a short path climbs a hill to the gravesite at Big Poplar Turn. Use extreme caution: this road is all tight curves and enthusiastic drivers.

Don’t expect facilities or exhibits. You’re here for a solitary gravesite and a tangible connection to the Smokies’ Civil War backstory. The setting is wooded and quiet once you step off the pavement, with the kind of stillness that rewards a brief, respectful visit.
