Space is tight, so signal early and pull fully off the pavement. The road is narrow and drivers are focused on the climb; keep your stop brief and watch kids closely. You’ll pay (or show your pass) at the fee station just up the road; sunrise entries require a separate Summit District sunrise reservation during the early hours. There’s no food, gas, or EV charging in the park, so arrive prepared.

The first real facilities are at Hosmer Grove just inside the park, with restrooms and a picnic area. Birders often detour here before heading higher. Beyond, the road climbs toward the cinder-cone desert and the summit overlooks.

Best time to visit

• Early morning or late afternoon: softer light for photos and fewer cars pulling over.
• Sunrise days: arrive well before dawn if you have a sunrise reservation and skip the photo until after—parking up top fills fast.
