Headquarters Visitor Center

Headquarters Visitor Center is the small orientation stop in Haleakalā’s lower Summit District. It’s a sensible place to pause before the higher road: staff can help with hiking plans and current conditions, and a compact exhibit hall introduces the park’s natural and cultural history. This is the first stop on the Geology Road Tour. Come for a practical briefing, not a large museum.

The geology story starts with East Maui Volcano. Haleakalā means “House of the Sun”; its summit rises 10,023 feet, while its base reaches the ocean floor 19,680 feet below sea level. The volcano has erupted about 13 times in the past 1,500 years, most recently 400–600 years ago near Makena on Maui’s south coast. “Active” describes its geologic status, not an eruption you can watch: there’s no lava, ash, vents or hot springs to see here.

The park store sells books, posters, souvenirs and educational materials, and a Junior Ranger booklet is available too. Food service wasn’t found here, so plan your meal elsewhere. There’s potable water and a bottle-filling station, plus auto parking and a picnic table. Wheelchair access and an accessible public restroom are available.

The center is on Crater Road around Mile Marker 11, on the right about a mile past the Summit District entrance gate. Entry to the district between 3 and 7 a.m. requires a sunrise reservation. The exterior restrooms are open 24/7, even when the information desk and exhibits are closed.
