Hosmer Grove Campground

Overview

Tucked just past the park entrance at about 7,000 feet, Hosmer Grove Campground is a small, drive‑in camp woven into an experimental forest of conifers and eucalyptus beside native shrubland. With roughly 10 sites, it’s intimate, convenient to the summit, and squarely in the cool, misty “cloud belt.”

• Sunrise made simple: a campsite reservation automatically includes your sunrise reservation for the following morning, so you can roll out before dawn without the extra booking scramble.
• Birding paradise: the Hosmer Grove Nature Trail begins and ends at camp and is one of the best places to spot endemic forest birds like the i'iwi, apapane, and amakihi.
• High-elevation vibe: clear nights can deliver excellent stargazing when clouds part.

What to Expect on Site

• Basic amenities: picnic tables, BBQ grills (charcoal or camp stoves only), potable drinking water, and pit toilets in a small paved-lot setting.
• No frills: there’s no store, restaurant, or gas nearby—come self‑sufficient.
• Small, close sites: the open grassy layout feels communal; some ground can be uneven.

You’re camping in the cloud belt, so count on chill and damp—think fog, drizzle, and a real temperature drop after dark. Even in summer, nights can hover near freezing. Bring warm layers, a solid sleeping bag, and rain gear.

Beyond the unusual grove of early‑1900s plantings, the star here is the birdlife. Wander the nature trail at an unhurried pace with binoculars—you’ve got a strong chance of seeing the scarlet i'iwi alongside apapane and amakihi flitting through the canopy.
