Before you go

Arrange access before setting out

Reaching the trailhead means getting through a locked access gate and traveling an 8-mile, infrequently maintained 4WD road: 5.7 miles cross Kapāpala Ranch and another 2.3 miles run through Kapāpala Forest Reserve. Driving requires high-clearance 4WD. Ranch gate access and an overnight cabin reservation are separate arrangements; hikers continuing toward the summit also need a National Park Service backcountry permit.

The route climbs from koa and ʻōhiʻa forest into alpine stone country. Ahu mark parts of the way across pāhoehoe, while snow can obscure the beaten track across ʻaʻā. Nights at this elevation can fall below freezing, and high-altitude storms can arrive without warning.
