Kīlauea Overlook

Kīlauea Overlook is a caldera-rim viewpoint on Crater Rim Drive West, looking across Kaluapele (Kīlauea caldera) toward Halemaʻumaʻu. From the park entrance station, it is about 2.5 miles by road, followed by a short walk from the lot. Stop for the scale of the volcanic basin even when no lava is showing.

Eruptions at the summit come and go, and fog or rain can hide the view. You may see fountains, flowing lava or a night glow during active periods; at other times there may be little visible activity. If lava is the reason for the drive, check the park’s eruption updates and the USGS volcano update first. Binoculars or a phone zoom can help with distant details.

The overlook is a short walk from its parking lot. A vault or composting toilet is listed for the site, and Crater Rim Trail can be joined here for a longer walk along the caldera. Carry water and food if you continue; weather can turn from hot and dry to wet and windy quickly. Stay on marked paths and away from cliff edges, ground cracks and steam vents.

In 2018, tens of thousands of earthquakes, ash plumes and a massive collapse reshaped Kīlauea’s summit. The event followed the end of Puʻuʻōʻō’s 35-year eruption; days later, the summit lava lake began dropping as magma moved underground toward the East Rift Zone. The altered basin you see from the rim is part of that story.

For a phone photo, keep a little of the rough rim or a nearby tree in the foreground, then aim across the basin toward Halemaʻumaʻu. That edge gives the crater scale. If there is a glow, a dark rim silhouette makes it stand out; take photos from the designated viewing area.
