A century-old military recreation retreat set right by the Kīlauea caldera, Kīlauea Military Camp (KMC) is the rare place where you can sleep, eat, and refuel inside the park. It serves active duty, retired, Reserve/Guard, veterans with eligibility, and their families or sponsored guests.
Few places put you this close to an active volcano with this many conveniences. From KMC you can quickly reach steam vents, caldera overlooks, and popular trails—then be back in time for a hot meal or a quiet night by the fireplace. It’s historic, no-frills, and beloved by military families for the location and value.
Rooms are generally clean and comfortable but can feel dated. Service is friendly, though food operations may be limited or short-staffed at times. The camp is quiet and family‑friendly, with easy access to sunrise/sunset viewpoints and stargazing when skies are clear.
Nēnē (Hawaiian geese) frequently roam the area, and white‑tailed tropicbirds sometimes soar over the crater. Give wildlife space and never feed them.
