Bailly Homestead and Chellberg Farm Trails

Overview

This is a mellow, forested trail network in the heart of the park that links three standout historic sites: the Bailly Homestead, Chellberg Farm, and the Bailly Cemetery. Expect packed-earth paths through hardwoods with pockets of wetland and prairie, plus interpretive signs that bring the area’s cultural history to life. It’s a great change of pace from the busy lakefront.

Distance & Difficulty

The most representative loop is about 2.1 miles total, connecting the homestead, farm, and cemetery. There’s also a shorter 1.1-mile loop if you’re pressed for time, and an “outer loop” option around 3.4 miles with roughly 120 feet of gentle gain. All routes are easy, with mostly flat footing and a few short slopes.

What You’ll See

Under a mature maple–oak canopy, you’ll pass wetlands (with occasional boardwalk), restored prairie, and corridors tied to the Little Calumet River and Mnoké Prairie. The historic Bailly Homestead and Swedish-American Chellberg Farm are the headliners, and the family cemetery adds a quiet, contemplative stop. Wildlife is common—listen for woodpeckers, watch for deer, and keep an eye on the marsh edges for frogs.

Trail Vibe & Conditions

This is a family-friendly, go-at-your-own-pace kind of hike. It’s popular, especially near the historic sites, but you can still find calm stretches—show up early or late in the day for the most solitude. After rain, expect muddy or slick patches and some roots. In late summer and early fall, mosquitoes can be intense; bring repellent and consider long sleeves.

Logistics

Start from the Bailly/Chellberg parking area near Chellberg Farm. There are restrooms by the lot and a kiosk with maps—grab one, as the many connectors can make navigation feel busier than the hike itself. Surfaces are natural and uneven in places; not all sections are wheelchair accessible. Leashed pets are allowed. No trail-specific permit or fee is required here; a general park entrance fee may apply.

Tips

• Choose your mileage: 1.1 miles for a sampler, 2.1 miles for the core loop, or 3.4 miles to trace the outer edge.
• Waterproof shoes pay off after rain. The shade makes this a comfortable summer walk.
• Want to keep going? Connect to nearby Little Calumet River and Mnoké Prairie segments or the Porter Brickyard Trail for a longer wander.

Best Time to Hike

March through November is prime: spring wildflowers, lush summer shade, and standout fall color. Weekends midday see the most traffic; sunrise and late afternoon are quieter and offer softer light for photos. Trails are open year-round—winter can be serene after snow, but watch for ice and slick spots.
