Geraldine Lakes

You’ll start in dense forest en route to First Geraldine Lake, then the terrain turns rocky and steep as you push toward the upper lakes. Expect large boulder fields, ridges, and several standout waterfalls between the lakes. The farther you go, the wilder it feels—upper lakes are especially remote and ethereal.

Officially a difficult route, plan on boulder‑hopping and sustained climbs beyond the first lake. Boulders become very slippery after rain or snowfall, so caution (and good boots) are essential. Navigation past the second lake can be less obvious; follow cairns and markers and give yourself generous time. A full return to the second lake typically runs about 5–6 hours, depending on conditions and pace.

There’s an official backcountry campground at the far end of Second Geraldine Lake. It’s a foot‑access only setup with simple backcountry amenities like picnic tables; bring everything you need and practice bear‑safe food storage.

This is Jasper backcountry: bears (black and grizzly), elk, deer, and various alpine birds are possible. Carry bear spray, make noise, and know the basics of bear safety. Weather turns quickly in this valley; pack layers and rain gear.

June 9–September 30, when the access road is open. Geraldine Lakes is generally less popular than other Jasper hikes, so crowding is usually moderate even on weekends. Avoid visiting right after rain or snowfall due to hazardous, slick boulders, and always verify current trail status and closures with Parks Canada before heading out.
