Mount Tekarra

Overview

At 2,694 m (8,839 ft), Mount Tekarra caps the northwest end of the Maligne Range and steals the skyline above town. It’s the photogenic, shark-fin peak you keep seeing from Jasper and along the Icefields Parkway—and an enticing side summit for Skyline Trail backpackers.

Expect classic Jasper alpine: rocky ridges, airy horizons, and sweeping views toward peaks like The Watchtower and across the Athabasca River valley. On clear days, the panorama is huge and camera-hogging.

Route Character

This isn’t a simple walk-up. Tekarra is best tackled as a scramble from the Skyline corridor, with a popular ridgeline link via Amber Mountain. The terrain shifts from hiking to hands-on scrambling, and wet quartz can turn slick fast. Route-finding is part of the game, and sections can feel more technical than expected if conditions sour.

Wildlife

Specific sighting reports are sparse here, but the surrounding alpine meadows and valleys sit in prime habitat for bighorn sheep, mountain goats, elk, bears (black and grizzly), and occasional caribou. Carry bear spray and know how to use it.

Season & Conditions

Late summer to early fall is the sweet spot—snow lingers into mid-summer and can return early. Some years bring wildfire smoke that knocks down those big views, especially later in summer, so pick a clear-weather window.

Logistics

There are no facilities on the mountain—no trailhead infrastructure at the peak, no restrooms, no water taps. Most parties approach from the Skyline Trail near Tekarra Campground. Bring a helmet for the scramble, layers for swift weather changes, and enough food and water for a long, committing day.
