Joshua Tree Visitor Center is a staffed visitor hub in downtown Joshua Tree, about five miles north of the park’s West Entrance. It sits outside the national park, so it works best as a quick orientation stop before you head south on Park Boulevard. Pick up a map and ask a ranger how to make the most of your time; if you’re entering from another side, this center is out of the way.

A gravel lot sits on the south side of the low, metal-clad building. From there, a concrete path leads through a modest cactus garden and courtyard to the patio and front door. The lot has 40 regular spaces and two accessible spaces. Inside are flush restrooms with running water and grab bars in the larger accessible stalls.

The one-room exhibits cover the park’s geology, the ecology of its two desert regions, cultural and historic sites, and recreation. Look for a life-size Joshua tree replica, a guitar beside a U2 record, and a short geology film. The center opened in June 2006, and the exhibits make a compact introduction before the landscape opens up outside.

The center has ranger help tables on the patio, a bookstore beside the exhibits, and a café at the north end of the building. If you want to understand the park before choosing your first stop, this is a handy place to pause.
