Cholla Cactus Garden

The loop passes through thousands of cholla on a level path with views toward the mountains. The loop is listed as wheelchair-accessible. Stay on the designated trail and wear closed-toed shoes: the joints can detach, and their tiny barbs catch easily.

Teddy-bear cholla, Cylindropuntia bigelovii, gets its nickname from the way its stem joints cling to anything that brushes them. Tiny barbs help the joints hitch a ride; they don’t leap on their own. Give the plants space, and don’t try to brush a joint away with your hand.

The cactus has few viable seeds and spreads when fallen stem joints take root. This large stand may be a single individual plant. That’s a remarkable possibility to keep in mind as you look across what appears to be a field of separate cacti.

Teddy-bear cholla blooms yellow-green, generally from March through May. Other plants along the trail add different colors: hedgehog cactus can flower magenta in May and June, while beavertail cactus has pink blooms from March into June. Bloom timing varies with the season.

The park recommends sunrise or sunset. Low light brings out the cholla’s pale spines, and framing the cacti against the mountain ridge captures both the close-up detail and the wide Pinto Basin setting.

The garden is about 12 miles south of the north entrance on Pinto Basin Road. There’s parking and an information kiosk at the trailhead. Food, drinking water and restrooms weren’t found in the site information, so check before relying on them here; this is a quick walk between service stops.
